Happy Friday What a crazy week! With a late start and a snow day, the students had to work hard to keep our learning on target. We continued our work on our persuasive essays. This week our focus was on working with our revision buddies and finalizing our writing pieces. We will finish this work by next Tuesday just in time to begin our Explorer research projects.
Our Reader's Workshop focus continues to be "theme" while we enjoy our read-a-loud, The False Prince. We also started our Explorer unit this week in the library. Our explorer research projects will follow the "Inquiry Process" as students learn to form their own questions that will drive their independent research as well as their ending choice project. During this unit of study, we will also be learning and practicing how to take annotated notes while researching. Exploration will take us well into March.
Happy Friday! In honor of our new social studies unit "Exploration," we started our new read-a-loud, The False Prince. While we begin to learn about exploration and the kings and queens who commissioned these voyages, The False Prince takes us back in time: In a discontent kingdom, civil war is brewing. To unify the divided people, Conner, a nobleman of the court, devises a cunning plan to find an impersonator of the king's long-lost son and install him as a puppet prince. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner's motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword's point -- he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. But Sage's rivals have their own agendas as well. As Sage moves from a rundown orphanage to Conner's sumptuous palace, layer upon layer of treachery and deceit unfold, until finally, a truth is revealed that, in the end, may very well prove more dangerous than all of the lies taken together. An extraordinary adventure filled with danger and action that will have readers clinging to the edge of their seats.
While we enjoy our book together, we will continue our study of theme in our read-a-loud as well as in our independent reading.
In Writer's Workshop, we continued our work on our persuasive essays. This week's focus was on counterarguments in their writing. Students shared their rough drafts with each other and helped each other think about what the counterarguments about their topics could be.
As the week came to an end, we heard more book talks from our classmates. Each student has recommended their books on our classroom blog, on the tabs labeled for each class.
