"Smart Thinkers"
Happy Friday!
This week flew by with the excitement of starting our Explorer research. We began our week with learning how to "Read around the text," procedure. Ask your child about this technique and how it helps the students tackle difficult expository reading. Students look at pictures and take notes, they read captions and take notes, look at any maps and charts and take more notes, and last, they look at any bold words or sentences and turn them into questions. Doing all of this before reading the text, helps the students collect some background knowledge. Later in the week, we learned how to take short notes in the margins of a text to help us organize our thinking while researching. As you may know, your child was then assigned their explorer to begin their research project.

In Reader's workshop, we continued working with our read aloud The Liberation of Gabriel King. Our focus was recognizing how the point of view of an author can change the meaning of a story.
We finished our week with Mrs. Kilpatrick joining us for a fun "Headbands" game related to our explorer spelling words.
