Dear 5th Grade Parents,
I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year as we return to school. I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday.
For the month of January:
In Language Arts we will continue with spelling and Wordly Wise switching off every other week. We are on Unit 5 on spelling this week of January 6. Please be sure to check-in with your child to help them stay organized and study their words each week.
In Writer’s Workshop, we are working on strong paragraph writing in class. Students will write a paragraph a week and we will choose from a long list of topic choices. During these few weeks, we will look at what makes a well structured longer paragraph. We will be modeling paragraph writing in the class and we will be sharing our paragraphs together. This paragraph writing is a lead in unit for our Explorer Biography picture books coming soon in Social Studies.
Our Reader’s Workshop is also ramping up on daily reading and thinking about what makes a good reader as well as inferring and analyzing what we read. You might have noticed a reading log and reading journal coming home each night. The students are paying more attention to reading stamina and the readability of a book each week. The students and I are also thoroughly enjoying the new 45 minute blocks of reading time that we have put forth in our class. During this time, the students are reading as well as conferencing with me one on one and in groups to discuss, analyze, and show excitement about books they are reading.
We are also focusing on Non-Fiction text features and the methods to reading Non-Fiction books. By practicing these skills, we are gearing up for the big research and writing pieces coming up in Social Studies. The students will soon be starting their Explorer research writing which will then lead them into their Great American research writing piece. While they are physically in Mr Smith’s room for Social Studies, these projects will be shared and worked on in both classes.
I do want to remind you to please check-in with your child to help them stay organized and to have all of their books and homework returned each day. The kids will start to notice a slight increase in the books and notebooks that need to go home and return each day. A little more to organize. In order for your child to grow and participate completely in our lessons, they need to have all supplies with them daily.
I feel very lucky to get to come to school everyday and work with such amazing students. Thank you for sending them to school prepared and ready to go.
